Teams from secondary schools in Pembrokeshire took part in a new 5x60 soccer tournament.

Held at Manorbier Football Club's ground on Sunday, the tournament was a joint initiative by Sport Pembrokeshire - Pembrokeshire County Council's sports development arm- and the community of Manorbier.

It was won by a team from Ysgol Bro Gwaun in Fishguard who beat Pembroke School by 3 goals to 0 in the final.

Councillor Rob Lewis, Cabinet Member responsible for Sport said the Council was keen to increase the number of women and girls taking part in sport and physical activity.

"Girls' football is popular in all our secondary schools so this tournament is a welcome initiative - doubly so because of its direct link with an established women's football club at Manorbier."

Nine school teams took part in Sunday's tournament which was almost an all-female affair with girls from Manorbier U17's and local female teachers refereeing, while members of Manorbier Ladies team kept track of the results.

Russell Jones, from Sport Pembrokeshire, and head of the 5x60 programme, said the tournament aimed to promote girls football.

"I'd also like to thank members of Manorbier FC for all their efforts," he said.

Organised in Pembrokeshire by Sport Pembrokeshire, the 5x60 scheme aims to encourage secondary pupils to take part in extra-curricular activities, while getting fit at the same time.

All eight Pembrokeshire Secondary Schools and Portfield School in Haverfordwest now have dedicated 5x60 officers based in their schools.
