Sleighless Santas Spotted In Llandissilio PDF Print
Tuesday, 16 December 2008 16:43

santa-1-8554Last Sunday, 14 December, almost 200 Santas converged on the village of Llandissilio near Narberth to take part in the third annual 5 kilometre 'Ras Sion Corn', or 'Santa Claus' Fun Run around the outskirts of the vilage.

Sleighs, reindeer and sacks full of presents were left at home [rumoured by some to be in Lapland or at the North Pole], as the Santas took to their feet to raise much needed money for the three beneficiaries, Ty Hafan Children's Hospice, Neyland's H.O.P.E. Centre and Llandisillio Hall.

As the Santas set off from the playing field and lined up on the main road for the start of their mission in the afternoon sunshine, the crowd of onlookers, supporters and well-wishers were entertained by the excellent Milford Haven Brass Band and warmed by hot cups of tea from the hall. County Councillor and Llandissilio resident, Huw George, gave a great running commentary of the race, thanks to his 'digital earpiece' which he repeatedly mentioned!

Santa number 61, Alex Matchett, kept in the lead for most of the race and arrived back in a well-deserved first place in a time of 17 minutes 43 seconds. He was followed seconds later by Marc Beazley and Megan Withers whose times were both only just over 18 minutes.

Llandissilio's Ras Sion Corn has raised a fantastic £15,000 for charity in the last two years, with organisers expecting at least another £2000 will be added to the total this year.

Ty Hafan provides respite, palliative and end of life care for children and young people who suffer from conditions which mean that they will not reach adulthood. [visit website]

H.O.P.E. [ Hyperbaric Oxygen Pembrokeshire Endeavour - Registered Charity No.1046171] is a local registered charity with the mission statement: ‘To better the lives of those people with Multiple Sclerosis.’ [visit website]
