Shelter Cymru's new 'Information Matters - to Rural Communities' project has taken off with an exciting start.

The project is the second phase in the Information Matters series by the charity. The new project will provide rural communities with a comprehensive information... resource providing advice on a range of consumer, debt, housing and welfare problems.

The project, funded by the Big Lottery Fund 'People and Places Programme' in Wales, will disseminate information to rural communities across Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion with a series of face-to-face briefings with community groups in the areas. A resource pack for the project is scheduled for production in March 2008.

People will be able to access the resource through groups and support with whom they are already familiar such as health visitors, youth workers, young farmer's groups, voluntary agencies and local authorities.

Ceri Davies, Information Matters Project Co-ordinator is delighted with the response they have received for the briefings.

"We know from our own casework that rural homelessness, debt and poverty are more hidden compared to urban areas," said Ceri.

"We are delighted with the response so far from organisations and local groups in Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire and Ceredigion. The introduction of the pack will enable people to access accurate and up to date information through familiar routes that they may not have been able to do before."

Ruth Marks, Head of Health Visitors and School Health Nursing and a member of the project advisory group said, "I fully support this project, which will deliver advice and information on housing debt and welfare benefits to smaller rural communities in Carmarthenshire. It is an example of funding used to help address the rights and empowerment of the public and their access to sustainable housing and freedom from poverty, both supporting a stronger foundation for personal and community health and well being".

Shelter Cymru would like to thank the Big Lottery Fund and participating organizations for their support.
