Autism Centre Gets Insight Into Policing PDF Print
Wednesday, 13 May 2009 09:45
autism_unit_pembrokeYoung people from the Autism Centre from Pembroke Comprehensive School have had an insight into the activities of Dyfed Powys Police.

The centre visited Pembroke Dock police station as part of their emergency services input from the police, fire brigade and the ambulance service.

The children were shown the old  custody suite, the CCTV cameras, the Neighbourhood Police office and they met a sergeant.

As part of the visit PC Johnny Morris and PCSO Kelly Mackay from the Pembroke Dock and Pembroke Neighbourhood Policing teams got all the children from the Autism Centre to fill in a form to receive an Autism Cymru identification card for people with Autistic Spectrum Disorder.

PCSO Mackay said: "The idea behind the card is if a person comes into contact with any of the emergency services they can produce the ASD Attention Card which states that they have an Autism Spectrum Disorder and lists a number of ways in which they may be helped to communicate more effectively in what can often be tense and difficult situations.

"It is very important that police officers are able to identify individuals with an ASD.

"These cards provide a means of doing that and allow us to work closely with Autism Cymru and the children it effects within the local area."
