Soroptomists in Cardigan have adopted Poppit Sands in the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park as part of a UK-wide coastal environment scheme.

The group chose to help look after the beach under the Marine Conservation Society's (MCS) Adopt-a-Beach initiative.

National Park Ranger Geraint Harries met the adoption team on the beach on Saturday June 7th where they carried out a clean-up and enjoyed a workshop led by MCS Wales Officer, Gill Bell.

Soroptomist Fay Cori said: "Our first clean-up involved picking up litter over a 100metre stretch, meticulously recording every item onto the MCS's checklists.

"We'll be doing more because Poppit Sands is a beautiful beach so we'll do all we can to help look after it.

"Cardigan Soroptimists strongly endorse the work of the MCS and the National Park Authority in helping to care for our coastline and protect our marine life."

National Park Ranger Geraint Harries added: "We're delighted that the Soroptomists have decided to work with the MCS and ourselves.

"We work with many individuals and organisations to conserve and enhance the coastal environment that makes the National Park unique, so we are extremely glad to be joined in that goal by more willing volunteers."

During the workshop in St Dogmael's Village Hall, Gill Bell said: "Plastic litter in particular needs to be kept off our beaches - it will never biodegrade. Marine animals eat our rubbish by mistake and often die as a result."

She added: "The Marine Conservation Society is always looking for volunteers to take part in Adopt-a-Beach.

"Anyone can adopt their favourite stretch of coast and take part in annual or quarterly beach cleans and surveys to monitor litter throughout the year and campaign for cleaner seas."
