Greenhouse Gets The Gold PDF Print

mathrysustainawardthumb.jpgMathry School has become only the third school in Pembrokeshire to be given a Gold Sustainable Schools Award.

Pupils at the north Pembrokeshire primary school earned the award for their environmental project work - including building a unique greenhouse made out of hundreds of plastic water bottles.

The greenhouse, located in the school's sustainable garden area, may well be the  first of its kind in Wales.

"The school already has a thriving garden and pupils wanted a new greenhouse so they could extend the growing season and grow new plants," said Janie Pridham, Pembrokeshire County Council's Sustainable Schools Officer.

"At first they thought of fundraising for a new one and adding guttering made of plastic bottles. However, research on the internet revealed a whole greenhouse made of bottles in Scotland so they decided to go for the more ambitious plan of making one themselves."

Pupils and teachers were rewarded for their hard work at a special Assembly on the last day of the summer term when Councillor Huw George presented them with the Oak Tree award.

The Pembrokeshire Sustainable Schools Award scheme recognises efforts to improve quality of life and the environment without damaging the planet for future generations.
