At midday he opened Narberth's 300-pupil school in Jesse Road, before visiting the new £5.8 million Prendergast School in Haverfordwest.

They are the latest in a long line of new buildings and improvements to the education infrastructure in the County.

The First Minister said: "It's a real double delight to be in Pembrokeshire today to open these two wonderful new school buildings.

"Costing around £10 million, they have been designed and built to the highest environmental and security standards.

"Pembrokeshire is setting a good example in how it is getting to grips with the problem of surplus school places and the Welsh Assembly Government is happy to support this with funding for new and functional buildings, ideal for taking forward primary education in the 21st Century."

Since its inception in 1996, Pembrokeshire County Council has allocated over £100 million to such projects.

The Chairman of Prendergast CP School Council, 10-year-old Ross Mathias, is pictured after the opening of his new school by First Minister Rhodri Morgan (second from left). With them is Pembrokeshire County Council Leader, Councillor John Davies; headteacher Paul Hughes; County Council Cabinet Member for Children, Young People, Learning and Welsh Language, Councillor Huw George and John Bartlett, Chairman of Govenors.Narberth CP School opened to pupils in July at a cost of over £4 million, replacing a 130-year-old Victorian building on a different site. It has 10 classrooms and, for the first time, an Early Years Unit.

The new 440-pupil Prendergast School replaces the former infant and junior schools.

Both facilities were funded by Pembrokeshire County Council and the Welsh Assembly Government. The main contractor for Narbeth School was W.B. Griffiths of Haverfordwest while for Prendergast it was Cotton Limited of Trefin.

What A Shame!
written by Anon, December 01, 2008
It was typical 'we are the County Council and we will exclude the people of Narberth from OUR school opening'.

The County council who organised the 1st minister's visit, did not invite the Mayor of Narberth or any other of Narberth's civic dignitaries to their ceremony.

How typical is that?? They seem to think that they can walk all over Narberth and nobody will say anything or even notice. No wonder the county council has such a bad image in the town.
