National Park Cyclists Lead Way to Healthy Lifestyle PDF Print
Friday, 19 June 2009 10:10
npbikers2National Park staff cycled to work on Tuesday, spurred on by glorious sunshine and the promise of a delicious free breakfast.

For the past five years a tradition has developed at the National Park Authority during National Bike Week, whereby staff lay on a spread for colleagues who  take to the road on two wheels instead of four.

This year, nine staff pedalled in to  the head office at Llanion Park, Pembroke Dock. Staff who work at the Authority's Cilrhedyn Woodland Centre in the Gwaun Valley will be  doing the same on Thursday. In total, they will have clocked up around 158 miles.

Newcomer James Parkin, who joined the Authority last month as Director of Recreation, Marketing and Communications, cycled in from Saundersfoot, about 12 miles away.

He said: "It was an absolutely beautiful bike ride, I had the sea on one side and green fields on the other. I started off early in case I got lost - but I wouldn't have minded because it's a chance to explore.

"I feel refreshed and set up for the day, and the breakfast certainly helps! It's a great idea - Pembrokeshire is a perfect place for cycling so I hope Bike Week encourages more people to take to two wheels more often."

Those who chose to take to the saddle earned 'green travel points' to be entered into a monthly prize draw, which is part of the Authority's Green Travel Plan to encourage car sharing, walking and cycling to work and while on Authority business. The scheme also includes the chance to borrow an electric bike.

The travel plan is one of a number of 'green' initiatives by the Authority, which also includes the installation of solar panels and a biomass boiler burning wood pellets at the Llanion Park headquarters, along with a rainwater harvesting system.

The Authority holds a Level Four Green Dragon environmental award.
