National Park Built Heritage Impresses Minister PDF Print
Friday, 19 June 2009 15:33
tenbyministervisitMinister for Culture and Heritage Alun Ffred Jones took a tour of Tenby's Conservation Area on Thursday 18th June.

The Minister was joined by dignitaries including Chief Executive of Cadw Marilyn Lewis and Tenby Mayor Cllr Sue Lane on a walk led by Rob Scourfield, the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority's Building Conservation Officer.

They viewed buildings safeguarded and restored under the Park Authority's Historic Townscheme Partnership which celebrates its 21st birthday this year.

The Minister met Tenby people who have benefited from the grants scheme, which allows property owners in all of the Park's 14 Conservation Areas to apply for funding to help with roofing, rendering, windows, rainwater goods and railings. Any work that takes place must use historically correct traditional styles and materials.

Building Conservation Officer Rob Scourfield said: "Historic buildings in Tenby and across the National Park make a huge contribution to the character and economy of the area and we work hard to protect them.

"We were pleased to receive the Minister's support for the Townscheme, which has conserved 250 buildings in Tenby since 1988.

"Building conservation also plays a huge part in the economy in Tenby, with the services of local craftsmen and tradesmen in demand. Between 1988 and 2009, 250 contracts were let to local builders at a total value of £4.6 million.

"We are extremely grateful to our partner Cadw, and to the people of Tenby who have helped us to protect their town's precious heritage. We hope this successful partnership will continue long into the future."

Minister Alun Ffred Jones added: "It was a wonderful opportunity to see the passion that local people in Tenby have for their local heritage and historical environment and their determination to bring it to life for others to appreciate.

"Our heritage is what makes us unique and the stories behind our buildings can enhance a visitor's experience whilst holidaying in an area, something that it particularly important to Tenby."

The Historic Townscheme Partnership grants scheme is managed by the National Park Authority and Cadw, with financial assistance from Visit Wales, Pembrokeshire County Council and Town/Community Councils.
