monkton_garden_2A run down area of Monkton has been transformed into a community garden.

Once a magnet for fly tippers, Gwilliam Court is now blossoming thanks to the efforts of local residents and Pembrokeshire County Council's Housing and Building Maintenance team.
.
Officially opened in the spring, the garden project recently won the  TPAS (Tenant Participation Advisory Service) award for 'Improving the Environment'.

This week community members and council staff got together to celebrate the award in the new garden.

"This new community garden is a wonderful example of the changes that can be made when the community and Council get together," said Councillor David Simpson, Cabinet Member for Housing and Sustainability.

"I'd like to say a big thank you to all the groups and community members of Monkton, who have worked with us to help make the project such a success," he said.

The project to create a community garden at Gwilliam Court started a year ago.

Part funded by the Welsh Assembly Government's Local Environment Quality Fund, it was designed by youngsters of Monkton Priory School and the local youth club, who also helped design and paint the totem pole at its centre.

Over the past 12 months residents - especially younger people of Monkton - have worked hard to make the transformation complete.

As part of the project two members of the Building Maintenance team worked with the Springboard organization, Monkton Priory school and the Tanyard Youth project to help six volunteers complete an OCN bricklaying qualification.

Following the completion of work at Gwilliam Court, a second garden area at Colley Court has almost been finished while plans are in hand to create a third garden area in Tenby Court.
