Pembrokeshire College Motor Vehicle Department helped save the day on this year's final round of the World Rally Championship in Cardiff recently.

The WRC selected eight students from two college teams across England and Wales for scrutineering duties at the rally final. However, at the eleventh hour the English college withdrew due to lack of financial support which meant Pembrokeshire College's young trainee scrutineers needed to step up to the challenge.

"Our students took full responsibility for the task and did it with true professionalism. The knowledge the students acquired while on the Motor Sport Course and the experience gained on last year's Rally Wales GB helped the team immensely," said college lecturer Huw Jones.

The students' responsibilities included marking wheels and tyres, weighing cars along with checking and servicing activities. Post- event scrutinising involved examining the internals of the winning Citroen that was driven by six times rally world champion Seb Loeb and Miko Hirvonen's Ford.

"The performance of the team was exceptional, especially when you consider the average age was only 17 years-old," commented Huw. Praise also came from the F.I.A Institute technical delegates with regard their professionalism performance and as a result the Motor Sport team at Pembrokeshire College have been asked to organise a similar team of scrutineers for the 2010 event.
