lugger-roundalIf you are interested in boats, engines and working in the marine industry, the free Rising Tide Training Programme could be just what you are looking for.

If you are over 16 years of age, and not in employment, education or training, you can apply. You do not need any experience or qualifications - just some enthusiasm.

You will get hands-on training and experience while working towards recognised boat building and RYA qualifications. Practical work can include woodwork, glass reinforced plastics and outboard engine maintenance as well as boat-handling skills, navigation, how to operate VHF radio and first aid training.

And, if that wasn't enough, you will also get the chance to fly the flag for Wales by taking part in a week's residential trip to Ireland, where you will team up with the students on the Irish training programme.

You will also work with other boatbuilders on the traditional construction of a Tenby Lugger. The Tenby Lugger is a 19th century working fishing boat that is unique to Pembrokeshire, so be a part of the build - and safeguard an important part of our maritime history.

There's also an opportunity to be selected to join the crew of a Tall Ship and have a once-in-a-lifetime experience sailing on one of these majestic traditional ships.

The six 10-Week Programmes are being run by Pembrokeshire College's internationally renowned boatbuilding and marine engineering centre, Mitec, at Milford Haven Docks. It's free to join a programme, as we are running the scheme as part of an exciting new project funded by European money.

The scheme will run Monday to Friday, 9.30am until 3.30pm. Places are limited - there will be six teams running between 2010 and 2012, with six places on each team to enable each crew member to get the most out of the experience.

Rising Tide's student co-ordinator Ruth Harris has many years experience working on innovative projects for young adults including working for the Prince's Trust, said: "For anyone that has an interest in wood, boats, engines or water-based activities, these courses could really boost their chances of progressing onto further training or employment."

"We are looking for keen and enthusiastic team members who will make the most of this fantastic opportunity."

Interested? On Friday 4th December, Mitec will be hosting a Recruitment Day for the first team. This day is open to anyone who is interested in applying, or would just like to find out more. Just drop in between 10am and 4pm, meet the people behind the scheme and pick up an application form. The first team starts on Monday 18th January, the deadline for applying is the 16th December.

Ruth said: "This will be an important day for anyone that thinks they might be interested in applying for our first team. Come along, have a taster of the activities we will be doing."
