Haverfordwest Farmers’ Market has won another award.
The popular fortnightly market on Riverside Quay is the Welsh winner of the National Farmers’ Retail & Markets Association (FARMA) Farmers’ Market of the Year for 2007.
The market was chosen as the national Farmers’ Market of the Year by FARMA this year (2006) after being runner up in 2005.
“This new win is good news all round,” said Kate Morgan, Pembrokeshire County Council’s Food Officer and Market Manager.
“A lively and popular Farmers Market makes economic sense. It helps make the whole area feel much more vibrant and somewhere people like to come and shop.”
Haverfordwest Farmers’ market was established in 1999 by Pembrokeshire County Council with the aim of making a positive contribution to the economic development of the County town. It was the first farmers’ market in Wales to be certified under the FARMA scheme.
Three quarters of stall holders are primary producers and there is a deliberate policy to encourage them to add value and diversify.
Although run by the Council, producers are also encouraged to have their say about how the market is run.
Sponsored by Zapp Canopy Umbrellas and Chillerz, the award is granted for good business practice as well as the produce on offer to shoppers, its support of producers, contact with customers, work with the local community and environmental impact and economic sustainability.
Haverfordwest Farmers’ Market is at Riverside Quay Shopping Centre on alternate Fridays, with an extra one in December (8th 15th & 22nd Dec; restarting 5th Jan 2007) from 09:00 – 15:00.
