Climate change is a challenge we cannot ignore said local AM Tamsin Dunwoody on Tuesday 13th February, as she pledged her support for an action plan to tackle the world’s biggest problem.

Tamsin Dunwoody backed First Minister Rhodri Morgan’s announcement that the Labour Assembly Government’s ambition is to put Wales at the forefront of action to address climate change.

Following the First Minister’s statement, Tamsin said:  “I particularly welcome your comments on the energy industry. As you will be aware, there are two oil refinery sites in my constituency and two liquefied natural gas sites, at Dragon LNG and South Hook, not to mention other forms of fossil fuels storage. As a constituency, it would be unfair for us to be penalised for a global market that we feed from a very specialist field, in addition to which we are developing a renewable energy sector that is based on our energy technium, and which is achieving great things.”

The First Minister also announced the Assembly Government’s plan to plant a tree for every child that is born or adopted in Wales.  Tamsin said: “The symbolism that this embodies is such that it will join up the public in the great debate about climate change, which is critical to moving the agenda forward”

“At a local and individual level, it is our responsibility, as citizens, to partake in this debate and to do what we can. The act of planting a tree will ensure that our children are aware that we are fighting for their future.”

The plan will include setting zero carbon level targets for all new buildings in Preseli Pembrokeshire and across Wales by 2011 and comes on top of the Assembly Government’s success in switching Wales onto renewable energy and energy saving.

Tamsin continues: “Many of my constituents tell me how important it is to them that we all play our part in tackling climate change. What people want to see is more action and less talk.   The Welsh Assembly Government already gets 90 per cent of its energy supplies from renewable sources and has given a total of £3.1 million to local NHS trusts like Pembrokeshire and Derwen NHS Trust to use their energy more efficiently.”

“This Labour Assembly Government is committed to combating climate change – in our homes, at work and across all levels of government in Wales. Wales is moving further and faster to reduce our carbon footprint. I would like to encourage everyone to get involved and do their bit for the environment and our children’s future.”
