CCW Takes Steps To Promote Equality In Wales

People representing minority or disadvantaged groups are invited to join a new scheme, set up by the Countryside Council for Wales, designed to ensure that a more diverse range of people become involved with its work.

Typically, minority groups - including ethnic, disabled and socially disadvantaged groups - are less likely than others to take trips out to enjoy the Welsh countryside and coast. This is a picture CCW wants to see change drastically in the coming years. Part of this requires working on specific projects with minority groups, but it also means ensuring that CCW itself better represents minority groups.

One large practical step towards this was taken recently when CCW Chairman, John Lloyd Jones, wrote to a wide range of minority and disadvantaged groups to invite representatives to shadow current Council Members, with a view to applying for Council membership through the public appointments system.

Mr Jones commented: “The scheme is particularly aimed at groups representing equalities, including gender, disability, ethnic minorities, Welsh language and other equality groups.

“If the scheme is successful, we will extend it to provide work placements with CCW staff for people from minority groups”

If you are interested in the scheme, please ring CCW’s Equalities Officer, Jenny Pye on 01248 385573 or email her at j.pye@ccw.gov.uk.
