Representatives from the new souvenir shop at Tenby Lifeboat Station, which has been hailed winner of the charity's National Supporter Awards will travel to London today (17th May) to pick up their award.

Souvenir Secretary Doreen Mortimer and deputy Sue Broomhead will attend the charity's annual presentation of awards at the Barbican Centre, London on where they will be presented with the accolade by His Royal Highness The Duke of Kent.

The awards acknowledge outstanding contributions from organisations operating outside the traditional RNLI fundraising branch and guild structure.

The new RNLI souvenir shop at Tenby has shot to success in the retail category, beating off tough competition from a wide range of other nominations from ferry companies, to golf clubs and hotels.

The Tenby volunteers have overcome some touch challenges during their move to a new location inside the town's new £5.5M boathouse. They have attended regular training sessions to get to grips with new technology such as tills and credit card machines and have seen a dramatic increase in sales.

The ceremony is part of an age-old tradition recognising the invaluable commitment of the lifesaving charity's volunteers.

RNLI crews in west Wales experienced their busiest year on record in 2006, with the Angle crew reporting a 15 per cent increase in call-outs. The volunteers crew responded to 40 incidents in 2006.

The station currently has a Tyne class lifeboat, the Tamar is bigger - 16 metres as opposed to 14 - and has a faster response time, with a speed of 25, rather than 17 knots.

The RNLI 's running costs are around £330,000 per day – and, as a registered charity, the organisation continues to rely on voluntary contributions and legacies for income.

It provides a 24/7 search and rescue service every day of the year (up to 100 nautical miles out from the coast of the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland ).

The majority of RNLI crews are volunteers whose everyday jobs can range from doctor, teacher, housewife, hairdresser - and of course fishermen.
