A new type of lifesaving volunteer is helping boaters stay safe when they enjoy the sea.

Volunteer Lifeboat Sea Safety Officers (LSSOs) are offering free advice to leisure boat users in the areas surrounding lifeboat stations. Their aim is to save lives by changing the attitudes and behaviour of those who go afloat.

The LSSOs aim to get their safety messages to target audiences through presentations, demonstrations, seminars, Sea Safety days and other events. And, of course, they are continuing the RNLI Safety Equipment Advisory Check (SEA Check), which offers boat owners a free informal chat with an expert about safety equipment.

The RNLI’s key Sea Safety messages are: wear a lifejacket, carry some means of calling for help, check the weather and tides, check your engine and fuel, and tell someone where you are going.

There are currently 11 LSSOs in the west division, attached to the following lifeboat stations:

  • Penarth
  • Barry Dock
  • Porthcawl
  • The Mumbles
  • Horton and Port Eynon
  • Burry Port
  • Angle
  • New Quay
  • Porthdinllaen
  • Holyhead
  • Flint

If you have any questions, would like to become part of a Sea Safety team, or want to order a Free SEA Check, please contact Nicola Davies, Divisional Sea Safety Manager (West), on: 01446 720677 or email: nicola_davies@rnli.org.uk

Every year lifeboats respond to thousands of incidents, many of which could have been prevented with simple safety precautions.

Even the most experienced seafarers should prepare for the worst.

The RNLI can help make your boat as safe as possible - you owe it to yourself and your crew.

The SEA Check is absolutely Free as the RNLI believe that prevention is better than cure and want to make sure that everyone gets the right advice.

So the whole SEA Check service, even the phone call, is free!
