Logging On For The Future

How does logging affect people living in the forests of Ecuador ?

That was the theme of a play performed by pupils from Year 5 at Ysgol Glan Cleddau in Portfield, Haverfordwest recently.

Their teacher, Jane Davies, has recently returned from a visit to the South American country and, as part of their global citizenship lessons, pupils learnt about the lives of people who live there.

In particular pupils looked at the arguments for and against cutting down rainforests - and the benefits of buying wood showing the Forest Stewardship Council logo.

The play was performed to mark the presentation of the school's Bronze Sustainable Schools Award.

"I was glad to be able to tell them that the plaque we presented them with came from sustainable woodland in Pembrokeshire" said Janie Pridham, Sustainable Schools Officer.

"This work has helped them to make links between their lives and those of people in other parts of the world".

The Sustainable Schools Award scheme recognises efforts to improve the local environment and quality of life now without damaging the planet for future generations.
