Children in Pembrokeshire have been listening to exciting tales involving swashbuckling heroes, derring-do and much more, at various county libraries, as part of World Book Day.
Pupils from St Mary’s Primary School and Pembroke Dock Community school visited Pembroke Dock Library to meet writer Phil Carradice, who was born and brought up in the town.
He read from some of his books and talked to the children about becoming a writer. His advice was: “Read, read, read. Forget the television and the computer, read everything and anything. Learn what is good, what is bad, what works, what doesn’t. And then write and keep on writing.”
Phil has been writing since he was a boy and lots of his stories are set in Pembrokeshire. He loves writing stories about the sea and ships, even though he gets seasick!
He talked to the children about some of his books including Hannah Goes to War, The Bosun’s Secret, The Pirates of Thorne Island, and his latest book, Black Bart’s Treasure, a gripping tale of treachery, treasure and adventure. The plot centres on missing treasure of the most successful pirate ever, Bartholomew Roberts or Barti Ddu from Pembrokeshire.
Local pupils met author Mary Medlicott, who is originally from Pembrokeshire, at Fishguard library on Wednesday, while Phil Carradice also entertained pupils at Haverfordwest Library.
Crymych library had class visits from Ysgol y Frenni to celebrate World Book Day and Llangwm school came in and listened to some stories at Haverfordwest Library with the County Council’s Arts Officer and storyteller Christine Willison.
