Plaid Criticises Pembrokeshire MP's Vote To Close Post Offices

- Plaid AM and ex sub postmistress Nerys Evans says, "The electorate will not forgive Labour for decimating the Post Office network".
March 22, 2008
Plaid Cymru have criticised Pembrokeshire MP Nick Ainger for supporting the closure of post offices in his constituency in a Commons vote this week. (news)
Plaid Cymru MPs supported a motion calling on the Government to suspend the compulsory closure of Post Offices until the issues associated with this have been re-assessed. However, the Labour MP for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire voted against the motion, and also voted for an amendment commending the government for its post office ‘rationalisation’.
Plaid AM and ex sub postmistress Nerys Evans commented: "I am extremely disappointed that so little support was given to the motion to stop these plans.
"I am sure residents in Pembrokeshire, who are worried about the future of their post offices, will not be happy to see their local MP voting to force them out of business.”
"The electorate will not forgive Labour for decimating the Post Office network, which provides a vital social service especially in rural areas".
The West Wales AM continued: "Plaid Cymru understands the need to modernise Post Offices in order to make them more financially viable, and supports such initiatives. However, the government began closing the Post Offices without adequately exploring how Post Offices could expand their services.
"The closure programme should be immediately stopped, and time should be given to explore how Post Offices can develop so that they remain an integral part of our communities."
