Classmates from two junior schools helped launch a new family-friendly trail around Tenby in the sunshine on Tuesday.

Children from St Teilo’s and Tenby Junior schools had a taste of the Tenby Discovery Trail, part of the multi-partner Discover Tenby Project led by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority.

The trail was launched at the National Park Interpretation Centre opposite the Five Arches. It takes visitors on a walk that passes historic places such as Tudor Square, Tenby Harbour, the Lifeboat Station, Castle Hill and the Tudor Merchant’s House. It also includes gardens that have recently been improved by Pembrokeshire County Council.

Information panels have also been put up in eight locations as part of the Discover Tenby Project.

Authority Chairman Cllr Simon Hancock said: “The Discover Tenby Project is a wonderful scheme and extensive partnership project that the Authority is delighted to have been involved in leading, helping everyone to discover Tenby’s fascinating and unique history and cultural heritage.”

Dr Mike Brew, Honorary Curator of Tenby Museum, added: “This project can make the visitor experience even better, which is great as we want visitors to not only come back but to tell all their friends to come back so that visitor numbers here get better and better.”

Deputy Mayor Kerri Durham presented the schoolchildren with bags of trail leaflets to give to their fellow pupils. The leaflet and the trail panels feature the illustrations of Pembrokeshire artist Graham Brace, including Owain the Dragon, who is the trail’s mascot.

Mrs Durham said: “By bringing history to life in this family-friendly way, the Discover Tenby Project not only gives visitors an enhanced experience of our town, it will also be of benefit to schools and the town’s residents.”

The trail leaflets can be picked up from outlets including the National Park Interpretation Centre. If you complete the trail and crack the secret code you can claim a certificate and get the stamp of approval from the centre.

Eleven-year-old Liam Mills, of Tenby Junior School, said: “I think it’s a great opportunity for people who are not familiar with Tenby to get to know the town and find out about the history that Tenby has had. I think I will do the whole trail now because I was really interested in going around Tenby because I have learned a bit that I didn’t know before.”

If the Tenby Discovery Trail whets your appetite, you can find out more about the area’s history by following the Civic Society’s new Historic Trail leaflet, which is also available from the National Park Interpretation Centre and other local outlets.

The Discover Tenby project is run in partnership with Pembrokeshire County Council, Tenby Town Council, the National Trust, Planed, Tenby Civic Society, Tenby Museum and Art Gallery, Tenby Events Management, Tenby RNLI and the Chamber of Commerce.
