The Conservative party is fielding 12 women candidates in next week’s county council elections.

Altogether the party is contesting half the 60 seats on Pembrokeshire County Council.

“We are fielding more young candidates than ever before and more female candidates than ever before,” said South Pembrokeshire Conservative party agent Di Clements, who is also standing in Penally ward.”

At the last council election only one Conservative candidate stood. But since then Preseli Pembrokeshire has elected Stephen Crabb as its Conservative MP.

The county has two Conservative Assembly Members, Paul Davies and Angela Burns, it has selected Conservative Parliamentary candidate Simon Hart by open primary and Conservative councillor Aden Brinn was elected to the council in a by-election last autumn.

“We are having a very positive response on the doorsteps,” said Mrs Clements. “People are appreciating that there’s an alternative candidate to vote for.”
