A young Pembrokeshire football squad took part in the biggest competition of their lives last week.

St Teilo’s School football team represented Swansea City FC in the Southern Finals of the Under 11’s Community Cup.

Organised by the Football League the matches were played at the home ground of Leyton Orient Football Club.

The young Tenby team was chosen to represent Swansea City after winning the South and West Wales region of the competition.

Both the Catholic Primary School and their neighbours Tenby Junior qualified for the regional finals last month, where they played teams from Swansea, Llanelli and Port Talbot.

Both made it through to the final, which St Teilo’s won 2-1.

At Leyton Orient FC last week St Teilo’s lost two games - to teams representing Luton Town and Swindon - they won against Leyton Orient and drew with Millwall, narrowly missing a place in the semi final.

“This was a once in a lifetime trip for the St Teilo’s team and they played extremely well,“ said Debbie Wise, Football Development Officer for Sport Pembrokeshire - the sports development arm of Pembrokeshire County Council.

“To have got so far was a tremendous achievement for such a small local school. The fact that both they and the team from Tenby Junior made it to the regional final shows the strength of football in the County.”

The St Teilo’s squad included Tyler Wherrett, Lloyd Hughes (capt) George Taylor, Billy Truman, Holly Furlong Connor Ennis, Elliot Wherrett and Safiya Rooney.
